It is a popular area to visit and it has lots of delightful places and venues to offer to all holidaymakers. Albufeira is certainly a great place to go and if you base your holiday here you will find it virtually impossible to be disappointed.

Albufeira has something of a split personality to be honest, since it has a dedicated area where nightlife is the order of the day (or night) and another one where the more relaxed activities take place. This latter area is the Old Town, and it is a charming part of Albufeira that many holidaymakers head for.

One thing you won’t find a shortage of in the area is accommodation. You can stay anywhere you like, from a small apartment near the beach to a whole villa all to yourself with its own pool included as well. There are also a number of complexes and hotels you could opt for; it just depends on where you want to stay, what your budget is and how many people are in your party.

In essence the accommodation tells you a lot about Albufeira itself. Whatever you want from it, Albufeira can offer it. This is a truly versatile area and it is incredibly beautiful and laid back as well. It can certainly get lively as far as the nightlife is concerned if you go to the right places, but this is also an ideal spot to visit for those who want a more relaxed kind of holiday.

Of course one thing that the whole of the Algarve is known for is its beaches. Albufeira certainly won’t let you down in that respect, since it has some amazing stretches of golden sand to lie back on and enjoy while you are there. In fact it would be hard to find anything about Albufeira that wasn’t delightful and well worth seeing. We’ve only just scratched the surface here and yet there is already plenty to look forward to. Why would you want to head anywhere but here?

Head to the Algarve to Blow Away the Winter Cobwebs

Given the bad weather we often have during the winter months in the UK, it isn’t surprising that some of us start seeking out foreign climes to escape to for a week or so in the early stages of the New Year.

One of the more popular destinations people head for is the Algarve. Nestling down the very bottom of Portugal, the Algarve benefits from having a great deal of winter sunshine for you to take advantage of. Even when we’re still in the middle of January or February, you can expect to get around seven hours of sunshine every day in the Algarve. This is an average but it just goes to show it is worth planning a holiday in this area.

Obviously it will be quieter in winter than it is during the height of the holiday season in the summer months. But this is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact after all the excitement of Christmas, what could be better than lying back and relaxing on an Algarve beach for a week in January?

It is worth considering where in the Algarve you want to go though. For example you should check out which attractions and venues will be closed for the winter. A good example is Aqua Land, the water park that is open throughout the summer season from June until September but closes for the rest of the year. In a sense a winter holiday in the Algarve is quieter for more than one reason.

However if it’s a laid back and relaxing holiday getting away from it all that you’re after, you will be in luck. The Algarve is a delightful and attractive place to visit no matter what month you might pick. Just be sure you plan to take something to cover up with during the evenings. While it can be lovely here during the day, it can be colder at night when the sun has gone down. It might feel odd taking a couple of jumpers or cardigans, but you’ll be glad you did when you get there.

The Algarve – A Perfect Destination For A Villa Holiday

Lots of places abroad have villas that you can stay in while you are on holiday. But the Algarve seems to have a particularly good selection you can choose from if you are looking forward to a holiday with a group of friends or perhaps with the family.

Most villas are well appointed and located in some of the most popular areas of the Algarve as well. It is also very easy to book a villa as your choice of accommodation if you are booking with one of the main travel agents, whether that is online or offline. Villas are extremely popular and with such a good selection of them in this part of Portugal it makes sense to book early to get the best possible selection of wonderful villas to choose from.

One of the most important things to consider is how many people will be in your party. If you are looking for a villa for you, your partner and your children you may be happier in a smaller villa. But if you are intending to have a superb time with a dozen or more friends in the Algarve you will clearly need something bigger.

Villas have the advantage of having private pools attached to them as well. Be careful though because not all of them may have this facility. In addition, depending on where the villa is, you may have to share a pool with people from other villas. So make sure you know what you want, where you want it and what is included in each accommodation deal you find.

It is definitely advantageous to have your own pool though, because you may not want to go down to the nearest beach every single day. If all you want is peace and quiet and relaxation, and the ability to go indoors to pour yourself a drink or grab a snack whenever you want to, a villa will be ideal.

There are many places you could stay in when you visit the Algarve. But as you can see a villa offers you one of the best experiences you could possibly have.

Faro – More Than Just An Airport

Most people who visit the Algarve will be at least a little familiar with Faro. It is, after all, the airport at which you will arrive in the Algarve for a week or two of sun and fun filled holidays.

But Faro has a lot more to show you than just the airport. Even if you have plans to stay somewhere else for the duration of your stay, try and spare a day or two to start your holiday in the city of Faro itself. If you can, you will see another side to the Algarve as well.

One of the most notable things about Faro is its history. It isn’t hard to find signs of life dating back many hundreds of years here. Roman times are well represented, but there are also more modern areas that blend well with the history of the city. Take the marina for instance, with its stunning array of boats bobbing around lazily in the water.

If you have only ever passed through Faro on your way to your Algarve destination, you might be surprised to discover how much you have missed thus far. This is a city that is known more for its airport than anything else, but this is an unfair statement to make. Holidaymakers are usually so busy and so eager to reach their final destination they forget to take a look at the first place in the Algarve they land in.

There is a lagoon and nature reserve right next to Faro too, which gives you something else to explore if you linger here. Watch out for the older part of Faro, which can be identified by the Roman walls that still stand here. Wandering around the streets, enjoying the views, the buildings, the marina and much more, you would be forgiven for feeling a little guilty that you didn’t visit sooner. Faro is a surprise waiting to be discovered, and if you land at the airport and scuttle through it without finding some of its many treasures en route to your holiday destination, you’ll definitely be missing out.

The Secrets of Tavira

The Algarve is an incredibly popular part of Portugal that takes up its southernmost end. Packed into this strip of the country are lots of towns and villages that are worth a look. Whatever kind of holiday you have planned in the Algarve, you should certainly carve out some time for Tavira.

It probably isn’t the kind of place you’ll have heard of before now, unless you happen to have booked a holiday there specifically. Let’s start our exploration by finding out exactly where Tavira is in relation to other major parts of the Algarve. It’s right on the southern coast of the Algarve, offering lots of attractive water based things to do for starters. It’s also easy to get to, because Faro – where the main airport is situated – is just a short distance to the west.

But is it worth making the short journey to Tavira and booking a holiday there in the first place? If you could see what this town is like beforehand, you would have no hesitation in booking at all. This town has lots of history to share with you, and it fairly pours out of many of the sights to see here. It also has some superb beaches and is ideal for family holidays that require lots of things to entertain the kids with.

One of the best things about Tavira town is that it is very close to Tavira Island. Yes, there is an island close by as well, and you will be delighted at this news because you could conceivably call the island a beach by itself. Indeed the island is known for offering some sensational beaches and there are plenty of them to choose from here.

Back in Tavira town you can look forward to exploring lots of whitewashed buildings and browsing around the local market as well. Whatever you want from a holiday in the Algarve, Tavira can provide it for you and give you lots more besides as well. Architecturally speaking, it is a stunning town and it will make you wonder why it isn’t better known than it is already.

What Is The Most Popular Algarve Resort?

Everyone who has ever visited the Algarve will probably have a different answer to this. But many would agree that Carvoeiro is one of the best ones, and there are lots of reasons why this should be so.

For starters it has the advantage of being fairly close to Faro, the airport where most holiday flights come into. It should take well under an hour to get to your Carvoeiro accommodation once you are on the road and on your way from Faro.

But what else does it have to offer? Well there are plenty of beaches in and around the area, and many of them are simply delightful. Carvoeiro itself has a small beach but it is well worth a look, especially if you want something a bit different to the usual large and sprawling beaches. This one is positively cosy and it has cliffs towering over each side of it. Small, personal and very nice indeed, it could be what you are looking for.

Carvoeiro is also popular for its variety of accommodation. If there are lots of you heading off on holiday together, you will certainly find some great villas to hire for a week or two. Elsewhere there are hotels and other forms of accommodation too – quite literally something for every single budget you could think of.

This destination is also ideally placed to open up many travel opportunities to you. There is a water park not too far away that you will be able to visit for the day. You can also sit by and watch as the fisherman who live in Carvoeiro catch their haul for the day. Later on you can try one of the many sensational restaurants in the area, and sample some of the fish that was caught earlier on. Seafood does not get any fresher than it is here!

Carvoeiro is a veritable treasure of delights for lots of holidaymakers, no matter what kind of break they are looking for. Make sure you enjoy every minute of your holiday here, and explore everything it gives you.

Zoomarine – A Contradiction In Terms?

Normally you would either visit a zoo or a marine attraction of some kind. So when you come across a venue with the name of Zoomarine, you know you will be getting something slightly different to enjoy.

The Zoomarine theme park can be found just outside the popular resort of Albufeira, in a spot called Guia. It’s a great place to go if you have kids with you, because this is a good family attraction to see. It certainly packs in a lot of entertainment and attractions, with an aquarium, swimming pools and much else besides to keep everyone entertained for the whole day.

You’ve got the Wet Zone to explore first of all. This is where you will find various pools to use for the entire family. Even babies have a suitable pool they can enjoy splashing around in with their parents, so no matter how old or young your kids are you can enjoy sharing some watery experiences with them.

Another popular spot in the park is the Aquarium Museum, which shares with you what it is like to be a shark. Their lives and daily habits are shared here, and it is quite an educational and eye opening experience too.

Even though there are plenty of marine creatures here and a wealth of exhibits to see, you can also enjoy the range of amusements the park packs in. The water slides and chutes are always a big draw, and you can grab a double blow up dinghy to enjoy splashing down in them with someone else too.

You can see you’ll be spoilt for choice for things to do here. The wide range of activities and educational exhibits at the park makes it a top choice for families of all descriptions. Even adult couples will love the activities at the park, so don’t be put off if you haven’t got kids. It really does have something for everyone to enjoy.

There are even areas you can just sit back and relax and watch the world go by for a while. You can grab a bite to eat and then get ready for the next activity at the Zoomarine park.

Visit The Fort Of Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina may well be a name you are not familiar with. But if you are heading towards the Portimao area of the Algarve in the near future, make sure you stop off to see what this place is like.

Back in 1621 the fort was an essential part of the coastline in the area. A strong defence could be mounted from here to ensure no attacking fleets could take charge of the Portimao area.

Since then of course things have changed markedly. The fort may not be required for defence any more, but it is still high on the list of things to do and places to go for those visiting the Algarve on holiday. When you visit the area of Portimao you shouldn’t have much trouble spotting the fort itself – you will see it perched above the bustling municipality.

You should be aware that not all the original fort remains intact. Unfortunately the area was devastated by an earthquake some one hundred and fifty years ago, and this earthquake took down part of the fort itself. However there is still enough here to see and you can get a wonderful view of the rest of Portimao if you head on up to see the fort itself.

You can quite freely wander around at the fort itself, although you will probably want to grab a seat and simply sit back and watch the world go by. The journey to the Fort of Santa Catarina is not so much to see the remains of the fort itself, but to see what else you can view once you are there. There is no doubt this is a key part of Portimao and it had a definite responsibility to protect and look after the town many years ago. Perhaps if it had not been there at the time, Portimao would not be there today for us to enjoy. It is quite a sobering thought.

Many people say the best time to visit the fort is just before sunset. You can then sit back and watch the spectacular sunset as it occurs, from just about the best vantage point in the whole area.

Get On Your Quad In The Algarve

There are plenty of different ways you can get out and about and start exploring the Algarve while you are there. But sometimes it is good to find a more unusual way to get around. And you couldn’t do much better than to try the quad bikes that are on offer.

Quad bikes are great to ride and provided you have a helmet on and you are dressed for the occasion you will have a superb time. The best thing to remember about these quad bikes is that they are available to take as tours. So you aren’t left to your own devices to roam around the Algarve on these things – you actually get to see something of the area as well. And what better way could there be to see the Algarve than this?

There are some distinct benefits of doing this kind of thing. For starters if you have never tried riding a quad bike before you are virtually guaranteed to love it from the moment you first sit on one. You are also likely to enjoy seeing more of the Algarve by travelling on a tour on one of these, purely because you go off road to do it. You’ll start on the roads so some basic road sense is a good idea, but then you go into areas you’ll never reach any other way.

Albufeira is a popular part of the Algarve and one of the tours takes you through parts of the area north of this location that not many tourists get to see. Can you imagine seeing real houses that the Portuguese actually live in, instead of seeing tourist locations all the time? This is what the tour has in store for you.

There is a longer tour available on these quad bikes as well, which means that if you love the first tour you will definitely be booking spaces on the other one too! There is no doubt that this is THE way to see the Algarve and to experience a part of it that some holidaymakers don’t even know is there.

Make A Splash At Aqualand In The Algarve

Hot countries are destined to have some great water parks built for the tourists to enjoy. The Algarve is just such a place, so of course you have a water park to visit. It’s called Aqualand and it is packed with delightful and challenging water rides to keep the whole family entertained.

The Anaconda is a good example of what to expect, since it has more twists and turns than the average Anaconda does! But you don’t just get a chance at one water slide – the Anaconda is comprised of five separate water slides. So when you have gone down the first one, you’ll be eager to climb back up and try one of the others instead. They all provide a very different experience and you’ll be tempted to spend all day on them.

But don’t do that because there are plenty of other rides and delights to try out as well. The Banzai Boggan may not be everyone’s cup of tea, because it enables you to skim the surface of the water once you have gone down a steep 23 metre drop. As you might guess you will have to prepare yourself for trying this one out.

If you prefer a ride that takes a little longer to complete, why not try the Rapids? The idea is to sit in a big rubber ring and propel yourself down the first slide. Once you reach the bottom you will splash into a big pool. And then after a few moments you will drift round to the next slide, which takes you down the next rapid. This is one ride that you will want to try again and again.

There is also a big swimming pool at Aqualand which is well worth visiting if you just want to splash around in the water for a while. The whole venue is very well planned out so you will love visiting the different areas in turn.

Finally, there is the Kamikaze ride – if you have the stomach for it. It’s steep, fast and certainly lives up to its name – and it takes just four seconds to reach the bottom! Are you game?

Get Away From The Beaches And Visit Monchique

The Algarve is a wonderful place to go if you want to stretch out on a nice beach somewhere. But this isn’t the only activity you can do; indeed it is nice to go there and visit such delights as Monchique as well.

Monchique is well away from the coast and is directly north of Portimao. It is also higher up in a mountainous region of the Algarve and as such you can get some nice views from here.

But perhaps the best part about this location is the fact that it is very different from the rest of Portugal. You can enjoy a nice drive to reach Monchique from virtually anywhere in the Algarve, which will set you up nicely for the sights you will see when you arrive there.

The first thing you will notice is that this is a real slice of Algarve life. This is not an area filled with tourists and their accommodation, neither is it stacked full of holiday homes. Instead you will see locals living their lives just as they would if you were not there. It provides a lovely insight into how those who live in this area go about their lives, and since they have such a lovely place to live in you will enjoy seeing every inch of it.

Monchique is a very rustic looking place so it will appeal to those with a love of all things natural – and indeed of photography as well. You simply cannot bring a camera here without clicking away at all the local scenes and images. Don’t miss the Franciscan Monastery which has a position watching over the town; this alone provides a wonderful vantage point and indeed a good subject for a picture.

You will particularly enjoy wandering around the streets of Monchique and feeling the cobbles beneath your feet. Watch out for local stalls and markets too, as these will give you the opportunity to buy some locally made produce to take back home with you. Monchique is certainly a discovery waiting to be made for everyone visiting the Algarve.

Why Head For Albufeira?

There are plenty of delightful places to visit in the Algarve. In fact you have so many places to head for and so many beaches to lie on you might have trouble selecting the best place to start.

For many people though the best place is definitely Albufeira. The location itself is virtually in the centre of the south coast of the Algarve in Portugal, slightly to the west of Faro and the airport. If you choose Albufeira as your holiday destination you won’t have too far to go once you have touched down on the runway.

But what makes Albufeira such a hotspot for tourists from all over Europe?

It is generally agreed that it has some of the most sensational beaches in the whole country. And when you think how many there are to choose from you can see that this is quite a statement. It is true though – it has plenty of beaches and they are all delightful to visit. They all have their own unique character so you may prefer some to others, but they all guarantee you a wonderful day spent lazing around on the sand.

Coelha offers a small beach and not as much in the way of crowds because of it, while Gale is completely the opposite. This location has a beach that keeps right on going, and you can spend ages just walking from end to end. It seems as if the beaches here were made with every holidaymaker in mind, no matter what kind of holiday they want.

But don’t fall into the trap of thinking that all Albufeira has to offer are sun-kissed beaches with the blue waters lapping around them tempting you in for a refreshing swim. You can take advantage of no less than three great golf courses here as well, along with countless places to stay in while you are enjoying your holiday.

There is enough in Albufeira to delight everyone looking for the perfect base for their summer holiday. Whether you want a quiet time or something more lively, Albufeira can provide it all.

Omega Parque – A Day Out For The Whole Family

When you are heading off on holiday somewhere abroad it is always good to find somewhere that you can take the whole family. But how many places have you ever found that are just as exciting for the adults as they are for the kids?

Omega Parque is one such attraction in the Algarve. This is a zoo, but it isn’t like any other zoo you may have visited in the past. This particular example is devoted to making sure endangered species are looked after. They also rear new additions to their zoo, making this a very interesting place to visit – not to mention educational for both the adults and the children.

One other bonus of this zoo is that it is open all through the week. So whenever you happen to be visiting the Algarve you can plan a visit here for a day without worrying about missing the opening hours. It’s easy enough to find as well; it is to the north of the Algarve in a central position from east to west, and it isn’t far from Monchique.

Hopefully many of the endangered species here will become more prevalent over time as Omega Parque works to make them safer. But it is good that people have a chance to come and see them in what is essentially a protected and safe environment. While this is an educational experience though, it is also a fun one that makes wildlife a fascinating topic for kids to learn about.

The zoo itself is easy enough to find although you may want to hire a car for the day to reach it. If you don’t want to drive you can get a bus from Portimao that goes directly north to the zoo along the N266.

Another benefit of visiting the zoo is that the entrance costs are quite reasonable. And since there is a family ticket available you can save even more money on what is one of the best days out in the Algarve. Wouldn’t you like to see spider monkeys, red pandas and much more besides?

Try Your Hand At Blokarting

Most holidays can give you the opportunity to have a go at one or two sporting activities you may not have tried before. For example you’ve got windsurfing or maybe some snorkelling if you fancy something a bit more relaxing.

But in the Algarve you can have a go at something called blokarting. If you are wondering what on earth it is the clue is in the name.

Everyone knows what go karting is. And blokarting takes that to the next level by adding a sail to what looks like a three wheeled kart. If that odd combination appeals to you, you’ll love blokarting when the wind gets up!

You need to be prepared to pick up a bit of speed if the wind is going in the right direction though. You’ll be sitting in a slightly laid back position and there is always the chance that the three wheeler might tip you out if you’re unlucky! It’s a pretty safe sport though and lots of people are finding that the blokarting location in the Algarve is ideal for trying it out for the first time. It benefits from almost constant breezes at the very least, and it can really pick up as well.

Look for Blokart Sagres in the Algarve as this is one of the best places to go to try out what is also known as land sailing. Somehow blokarting is a much better description of what to expect though. Land sailing sounds a little bit too laid back. And you will certainly remember your first attempt at blokarting as you breeze along the ground propelled by a tough sail with the wind behind you.

It’s located in Vila do Bispo, which is in the far bottom left hand corner of the Algarve itself. The location not far from the coast certainly counts for the good and windy conditions that you will find there! If you aren’t sure whether you want to have a go or not, go along and have a look at some other people doing it. We’re sure you will end up getting strapped in yourself to give it a go.

Discover Portimao

The Algarve is famed for its beaches, but you should also make a point of seeing some of the cities. One of the best of these has to be Portimao.

You’ll find it located on the southern edge of the Algarve between Lagos and Albufeira. It’s a good place to head to if you happen to be on a golfing holiday but there is a lot more to it than that. It used to be a big part of the fishing industry but that is no longer the case. This fact doesn’t make the area any less worth visiting though.

In fact you can still see many signs of the old Portimao in this respect. When you visit the local museum you will find yourself standing in what used to be a factory for canning sardines. The impressive marina in Portimao is also worth a look, even if you don’t have your own boat to moor up in the area!

The location itself also has plenty to offer and provides a starting point if you want to take a boat trip out of the harbour. One of the best of these has to be the Santa Bernarda pirate ship. There are a number of excursions you can book onto, one of which explores the local caves around Portimao itself. It’s a fascinating way to see part of the Algarve coastline in this area that you would otherwise miss.

And of course Portimao is a great place just to wander around too. You’ll find plenty of shops and restaurants to explore, and there are lots of local dishes available to try. Why not explore for the day and then enjoy a meal in a local restaurant to round things off?

There is no doubt that some people come to Portimao simply to enjoy the golf. There are plenty of courses nearby too. But if you don’t explore what the rest of the area has to offer you will regret it. Portimao has character and charm, and while it may not be an integral part of the fishing industry in the same way it once was, it still has a lot to offer.

Europe's best golf is in Spain, Portugal

Contrary to common belief, quality golf, "Across the Pond", is not limited to the cool, damp climates of Northern Europe, in fact most of Continental Europe's very best courses, bask in year round sunshine, far to the south. Nowhere is this more in evidence than in Spain and Portugal, the joint occupants of The Iberian Peninsula, which over the past half century have established themselves as Europe's Golf Headquarters. Yes, these two countries of Fado and Flamenco, each with its own colorful history, rich cultural heritage, fine gastronomy, intriguing ancient cites and so much more, have over the past half century, carefully developed golf infrastructures that rank alongside the world's best.

With the decided advantage of weather on their side and no fear of hurricanes or other natural disasters that increasingly plague sunshine destinations closer to home, golf on the Iberian Peninsula has been growing by leaps and bounds. Wisely it has been a controlled development, with a particular emphasis on quality and the protection of the environment. Learning from the mistakes of others, Portugal and Spain have established the standards by which others are now judged.

The concentration of the best courses on The Iberian Peninsula, very much follows its southerly coastline. Starting from Portugal's enchanting capital city of Lisbon, following the Atlantic shore south to The Algarve, then crossing into Spain and continuing into The Mediterranean Sea to the Costa del Sol. From here Iberia's golf trail continues northeast, hugging the Mediterranean shore to Valencia, then Barcelona and onward to the French border.

It's a lot of coast - 325 miles in Portugal and another 1,000 miles in Spain, but it's also a cornucopia of quality golf courses. Many of the names will be unfamiliar, but selecting those best suited to your own wants and playing abilities, needn't be confusing. Put your trust in a reputable golf travel company, such as Golf International, taking advantage of their expertise and knowledge.

For the golf aficionado, looking to experience the very best of Iberia's impressive collection of courses, the following are my personal choices, intentionally limited to just 6 in Portugal and 6 in Spain. They are however, only the tip of the iceberg, leaving plenty of others that could be included. So regard this little golf tour as just an appetizer for the golfing banquet that is the Iberian Peninsula.

In Portugal, we start our journey on the Lisbon Coast, just an hour's drive north of the charming capital.

Praia d'El Rey. At only 10 years young, this links-like layout, spread out along a few miles of gorgeously pristine Atlantic beach, contains a maturity and challenge, way beyond its tender years. As tough as they come from the back tees, the course graciously caters to the less accomplished players from the front. Don't miss a visit to the nearby, fascinating medieval town of Obidos, either before or after your round of golf.

Oitavos Dunes. Located a brief 30-minutes by car or convenient commuter train from the heart of Lisbon, in the beach resort of Cascais, Oitavos took Europe's golfing intelligentsia by storm when it hosted the Portuguese Open just 4 years after opening in 2001 and it hasn't looked back since. It hosted this prestigious tournament again in 2007 and 2008. The severity of Oitavos' test is only complicated by the incessant winds blowing in from the Atlantic, the only consolation being the superb sea and mountain views from every hole. The 18th here just might be the toughest closing hole in European golf.

Troia. An extremely intelligent design from Robert Trent Jones Sr., Troia will always be a showpiece of Portugal's golf and one of the best layouts on the entire Iberian Peninsula. The small, sometimes deviously contoured greens are well defended by superbly placed bunkers that are often frighteningly deep. This is an exhilarating test for the better players and a thrill packed ride for the rest of us. Troia is located on picturesque sliver of a peninsula, just a 45-minute drive and short ferry ride, south of the city of Lisbon.

From Lisbon, it's only a 2-hour motorway drive to The Algarve, Portugal's relaxed southernmost region and another important golf center with more than its share of top ranked courses. Vilamoura, located in the center of The Algarve is a very special resort community, boasting 5 superb courses, two of which make their way onto the list of Portugal's best

Vilamoura's Victoria Club is the latest addition, a piece of design artistry from our own Arnold Palmer and for many, his very best design effort. Hosting the WGC World Cup within a year of opening and selected as the regular venue for the new European Tour event, The Portugal Masters. Victoria is quite simply Portugal's # 1 course and a must play for any serious golfer.

Vilamoura Old Course is the pioneer layout here and the work of the great English architect, Frank Pennink. Reminiscent of a classic English parkland course, The Old remains a favorite of everyone who has the pleasure of playing it. It's a course for the thinking golfer, where the mature trees come very much into play and even the short holes are no walk in the park. Superbly maintained, this is one that will make you thankful you play the game.

San Lorenzo is one of Portugal's top courses, a position it has held since first opening in 1988. The design is imaginative, the setting immaculate, and American designer, Joseph Lee has united the two into a thrilling golf experience, capable of testing the most accomplished player to the extreme. Containing every difficulty in the book and the ability to use every club in your bag, the high handicappers will encounter more than a few difficulties, but for the rest, it will be an experience filled with memories.

It will take a couple of hours to drive from the central Algarve across the Spanish border and into Spain's Costa del Sol, and the heaviest concentration of golf courses in the entire country.

Valderrama. Since hosting The Ryder Cup in 1997, Valderrama has become the most widely recognized golf club in all of Europe. It has also been ranked Continental Europe's best course for each of the past 16 years and was the permanent venue for The European Tour's most prestigious event, the season closing, Volvo Masters. Golf pedigrees just don't come any better than that. Any golfer visiting this part of Spain simply must play this stunning layout, but visitor times are limited and you will be well advised to get some assistance from an experienced golf travel company, such as Golf International.

San Roque New is located a 10 minute drive away from Valderrama and is a brilliant design from Perry Dye, specifically geared toward the scratch and low handicappers. Big hitters will be well rewarded, only if they are accurate and the punishment for those who are not will be the depths of some of the most ominous bunkers known to mankind. Strategy and ability are the prerequisites for any decent score on this humdinger of a course - strictly a layout for the big boys.

Sotogrande is only a few minutes further away and the third spectacular layout in this Golden Triangle. There are tough restrictions on visitors to this exclusive private club, so again, you will need the assistance of a qualified golf travel company, but it will be well worth it. This is a great example of Robert Trent Jones at his best, with innumerable water hazards, huge undulating greens and majestic trees - a real beauty.

Las Brisas is located about a 40-minute drive away, toward the fashionable resort town of Marbella. This is another crackerjack course filled with variety and constantly changing challenges. The multitude of elevated greens makes approach shots tricky and each green is jealously protected by shrewd and sometimes downright devious bunkering. Adding to the excitement is water that comes into play on 12 holes. A thriller from beginning to end, it's a course to please everyone.

El Saler sits some 300 miles northeast of the Costa del Sol, just outside of the historic city of Valencia, which would be well worth a couple of days stay, even if there was no golf, but El Saler is ranked as Spain's number two layout and can't be missed if you are collecting the best of Spanish golf. Noted Spanish designer, Javier Arana is responsible for this combination of British style links and forested layout, which can be brutally tough. The large undulating greens are often blind and difficult to read, once you find them. Playing to your handicap is a definite accomplishment.

PGA Catalunya is situated about an hour's drive northeast of Barcelona, en route to the Costa Brava. The top ranked course in the Catalonia region, this is a handsome layout that is also extremely demanding. Hilly, but with wide, rolling fairways that wend their way through dense forest where the rough is as unforgiving as most will have experienced. A couple of lakes add to the good looks and join the defense arsenal of excellent bunkering, sloping terrain and that uncompromising rough. Another course for the tough guys.

For more information click here

Golf holiday ideas in the Algarve

Whether trying golf for the first time or looking for a new challenge, this spring offers the best time to visit the Algarve - the region of Portugal packed with golf holiday ideas.

With 32 Championship standard golf courses that bask in the year round sunshine, lush fairways with fast, rolling greens, courses in the region are likely to prove a hard but enjoyable challenge for all golfers.

All this, plus some amazing money saving deals, why not escape the UK gloom and jet off to practice your swing in the sun?

Golf holidays in the Algarve

The Algarve is only approximately two hours away by air and it is served by 22 UK regional airports, making it one of the most accessible golf destinations for Britons looking to play overseas.

With the Algarve offering the best, newest and biggest choice of golf courses, golfers are spoilt for choice, making it no surprise that the region hosted over a million rounds of golf in 2008.

Quinta do Vale Golf Course

Designed by Severiano Ballesteros, one of the newest courses in the Algarve is the Quinta do Vale Golf Course (inaugurated last October). The city will be filled with colour and cheer as visitors and locals enjoy the vibrant parade of extravagant floats, over-sized puppets, samba groups and lots of music.

From May 4-9 the Algarve International Film Festival in Portimao will showcase short films from international filmmakers. In 2009 the festival will focus on 'Cinema and Globalisation in the World' and hopes to attract a broad mix of multicultural films.

For five days in July colour and excitement will fill the streets of Loule again as the Med Festival takes place. World music originating from Morocco and various southern European countries, such as Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal will fill the air. Visitors will also enjoy handicraft exhibitions, dance performances and street theatre.

A paradise for seafood lovers, the annual Festival do Marisco, is held in August each year in the town of Olhao, just five kilometres from Faro. One of the most important gastronomic events in the Algarve calendar, the Festival do Marisco offers visitors the chance to sample some of the local delicacies. A wide range of seafood is available, ranging from grilled sardines to fried shrimps and of course the traditional cataplana, a much loved Portuguese dish consisting of clams, mussels, bacon, chourico, garlic, onions and olive oil. Music and folk dancing accompany the festival, with performers encouraging both locals and visitors to eat, drink and enjoy the superb atmosphere.

At the end of August, Castro Marim and Silves return to the Middle Ages, in a highly rigorous historical recreation. During four days and nights, the castle of Castro Marim plays host to kings and queens, knights in shining armour, jesters, noblemen and ladies. Jousting tournaments, on foot and on horseback, street theatre performances, banquets accompanied by medieval music and a handicraft and merchandise fair, complement the entertainment during these Medieval Days, which enable visitors to relive the magic and mystery of times gone by.

The Algarve will also host some world class sporting events during 2009. The new 200m Euros Autodromo Internacional Algarve track in Portimao covers 300 hectares of land between Portimao and the hills of Monchique, with a capacity for up to 100,000 spectators. Key racing events are already confirmed in 2009 including the A1GP World Cop of Motorport on April 12 where UK visitors can cheer on the British team; the Historic Formula One Championship on May 10; FIA GT Championship on September 13; GP2 Series on October 4 and for the second year running the SBK Superbike World Championship on October 25. The motorpark complex also includes a five-star hotel, apartments and restaurants.

Visitors can witness the great skill and expertise of the world's top drivers racing along the roads and tracks of the Algarve from April 2-5, competing in the Portugal Rally. The route combines fast open stretches with some technical and challenging tracks. Situated only eight kilometers from Faro International Airport, the Algarve Stadium will be the setting for the event's closing ceremony, while also acting as the rally's operational centre.

Prepare to be blown away by the spectacular moves of the world's finest kite surfers at the Kitesurf World Championship in Portimao in July. This exciting new sport attracts many young people and during the event Portimao will come alive with nightly entertainment.

July is the month for speed as Portimao hosts the final stage in the Powerboat P1 World Championship from 3-5. Powerful single-hull vessels will slice through the water at speeds in excess of 160 kmph offering plenty of excitement for fans and visitors to the region. As this is the last leg of six, the region will come alive with a party atmosphere in line with other Grand Prix events.

October is the month for golf with the world's greatest golfers travelling to Vilamoura to take part in the Portugal Masters. Considered to be one of the leading golf events, the Masters is to hold its second edition in Portugal from October 15-18, 2009. It will take place at the Victoria Golf Club. The course was designed by the famous player, Arnold Palmer and the design alternates between well-positioned bunkers with lakes and waterfalls and is a continuous challenge for players.

Whether you are looking to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal clear waters and golden sands of the coast, delve into the history and culture of the region's beautiful towns and or just relax in the lush green countryside, the Algarve has plenty to offer.

For more information click here

Algarve looking to attract ailing tourists

Five star hotels in the region are looking to attract more tourists by appealing to those who may suffer health problems, foreign and national, by offering specialised spa treatments and medical assistance that is cheaper than in tourists' home countries.

Also, it has been predicted that the number of beds in private clinics will triple over the next five years.

Treatments such as massages, thalassic therapy, shiatsu, acupuncture and Vichy baths are just a few of the most popular treatments available from 20 five-star hotel spas in the Algarve.

At present, so called 'health-tourism' is limited to five-star establishments, which essentially offer natural treatments and do not incorporate traditional medicine.

Generally, tourists prefer treatments incorporating plants, water or sea water, aromatherapy, relaxing massages or Chinese-based medicine.

These are aimed at tourists who are not ill of health, but are looking to improve their well-being.

Experts say around 30 per cent of clients using five-star spa treatments are Portuguese, the remaining 70 per cent being mainly German, American, English, Scottish, Dutch and Spanish.

Indian Ayurvedic massages, Hawaiian Lomi-lomi and Japanese Shiatsu treatments are also growing in popularity.

But Antonio Pina, President of the Algarve ERTA Tourism Board believes there is a future in traditional health tourism, describing the Algarve as a perfect destination for convalescing.

"With our climate, we have all conditions necessary to attract this type of tourist", he said, explaining the aim is to tie in conventional medical treatments with hotel accommodation for the patient/tourist and their family.

Over the next five years around a dozen new private hospitals aimed at 'health-tourism' will take shape, tripling the current number of available beds.

For more information click here

10 best exotic places to take an extended holiday

1. Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve on the south coast of Portugal is and has been one of the top exotic extended holiday spots for many United Kingdom and European residents for years. Many Canadian tour operators offer packages. The region offers temperate and mild warm weather, large resort areas surrounded by small villages and four championship golf courses. Besides its 150 beaches, be sure to visit some of the "Pueblos Blancos" or traditional villages such as Monchique, for great views and authentic Portuguese arts and crafts.

2. Southern Spain: Costa del Sol

There's nothing like the Mediterranean beaches of the Spanish Coast to call on all sunbathers, the stylish rich and famous, and party people. In Costa del Sol, you'll find exotic beaches, golf, luxury resorts and Puerto Banus, one of TripAtlas.com's Top 10 Portside Cities of the Western Mediterranean, the most luxurious marina in the world. Honourable mention on the coast also includes Costa Blanca and Costa de Almeria.

3. Morocco

From the magical streets and markets of Marrakech to the little-known beaches of Essaouira, Morocco is no longer a haven just for indulgent artists and poets. As one of the best expressions of North Africa, there's something about Morocco that exudes an alluring and exotic culture that takes an extended holiday or long stay to really appreciate. Visit Morocco before it expands into a resort-overloaded destination.

4. Goa, India

Goa is a hot holiday spot for Indian and South Asian vacationers and is best known for its beaches, festivals and ancient temples. It was once a Portuguese colony and thus offers an eclectic mix of both east and west. Calangute and Candolim are the most popular beach towns, but Goa's capital Panaji (also Panjim) is worth a visit, as is Ponda, a sacred site of Goan temples.

5. Florida

While Florida may not be the most exotic destination on the list, Florida is home to hundreds of thousands Canadian snowbirds each year. Stay in the Florida Panhandle area, which is less crowded, or the attraction-filled Orlando. Perfect your "Captiva Crouch" on Captiva Island or your golf game at the hundreds of golf courses throughout the Sunshine State. Many condo rentals, airlines and tour operators offer great deals.

6. Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura

Off the northwest coast of Africa between Morocco and Western Sahara, the Canary Islands are a set of volcanic islands that are the perfect hideout for Europeans and other visitors looking to stay away from snow and chilly winds. Destinations include the bigger islands of Grand Canaria and Tenerife, while Fuerteventura is known for its windsurfing and La Gomera is best for its rainforest and walking trails.

7. Bali, Indonesia

Stay for a month in Bali to get the best of enchanting Indonesian culture, cuisine, and beautiful beaches. Popular spots in Bali include Benoa Beach, Legian and Sanur Beach. This region is known for water sports enthusiasts including honeymooners, scuba divers and surfers.

8. Phuket and Pattaya, Thailand

White shores and the most stunning aqua blue waters you'll ever see, Thailand and other coast-side spots in Southeast Asia such as Penang, Malaysia, are popular holiday destinations. They bring together cultural heritage, mountain views, elephant camps, ancient temples and palaces, stunning beaches, water sports, resorts, restaurants and nightclubs - all in one place. Popular Phuket destinations include Karon, Patong and Kata Beaches. Hotels, resorts, B&Bs, or half/full board accommodation are all available.

9. Mazatlan, Mexico

For fresh seafood and for sports fishing fans, Mazatlan offers exactly what you need for your extended holiday getaway. While it's a great resort area with warm beaches that you could laze on for weeks, Mazatlan also gives its visitors a taste of Mexico from the past as well as today. It's such a nice place, many Canadians, Americans and Europeans now move to Mazatlan to retire.

10. St. Martin, Caribbean

Among the many paradisiacal islands in the Caribbean, TripAtlas picked St. Martin because of its great mix of relaxation, culture and a refined sense of exotic French and European flavours. An extended holiday on St. Martin also allows time for you to explore the Dutch side as well, or island hop to and from other nearby islands such as Anguilla, St. Barts and Saba.

For more information click here

Pirates and sun in the Algarve

It may be best known as a golfer's paradise but there is so much more to see and do in the Algarve in Portugal. A stunning coastline with golden beaches as well as vibrant towns and attractions, there really is something for everyone.

Breakfasts on the balcony of an apartment in Carvoeiro is a most enjoyable way to start the day.

From the villa, it was about a 30-minute walk to Carvoeiro town centre but for those who like to take it easy, hire cars are readily available.

But walking was a great opportunity to take in views of true European life with stunning white villas dotted along the sun-drenched coast.

Flanked by restaurants and shops and with very useful shower and toilet facilities, Carvoeiro beach seemed to be the top spot for sun worshippers, which is spacious but often crowded.

If you are looking for something a bit more secluded, Paraiso beach is close by enclosed by a huge looming cliffside and only accessible via 115 steps.

This beach is ideal for a quiet moment in the sun or a dip in the sparkling water and while we were there we even saw a scuba diver bearing a harpoon gun.

Above the beach, there is also a restaurant where you can refresh yourself while soaking in the spectacular views.

Prior to our arrival we bought a phrase book and practised our Portuguese but the truth of the matter is, like much of Europe, everyone tended to speak English and apart from a grumpy bus driver we had no trouble.

As quite a fussy pair, we also wondered what we would eat but with restaurants of all flavours including a large number of pizzerias and steak houses, we had nothing to worry about.

One of the best was Maxime, which offers everything from succulent steaks to well thought out vegetarian dishes in an intimate setting.

That said, we were self catering and initially struggled to find meals to have at the villa. The supermarkets all had lovely fresh bread but beyond that, there was little more than basic provisions.

However, a quick taxi to Inter Marche (the equivalent of, say, Tesco) solved our problems.

Carvoeiro was also a useful connection point for buses further afield.

The most memorable day out was to the port town of Portimao where a great number of boat trips are available throughout the day.

We opted for a cruise on the 'pirate boat' Santa Bernarda, which took us on a four-hour trip along the Algarvian coastline.

From photos, we learnt that the Santa Bernarda was originally a traditional metal vessel and was lovingly converted into a wooden, two-masted sailing boat as a unique tourist attraction.

During the tour, crew members also took groups out on small boats to get a closer look in and around the intricate caves - one of which had its own tiny beach submerged in the darkness.

With the fresh sea air and a very different view of the Portuguese landscape, it was a wonderful trip and one really worth forking out for. It was also interesting to see the beaches that we had spent time on from the perspective of the water.

One such beach was Carvalho beach that we had visited just the day before.

This quaint beach is instantly recognisable for the gigantic rock in the middle of the sea, not far from the shore, and is accessible through an ancient tunnel - although some people choose to get there by jumping off the cliff edge into the water below.

Relaxing on this beach felt like being a visitor from a bygone era and sitting on the beach there was also a rickety old boat.

Whether this boat washed up on shore after countless voyages on the ocean wave or was simply placed there to add to the aesthetic appeal of the secluded spot, who knows, but many people hope it is the former.

To soak up a greater sense of history while we were there, we visited the market town of Silves to explore its Moorish Castle on the top of the hill.

The castle, which dates back to the eighth century, was heavily restored in the 1940s and now offers superb views in every direction if you clamber up to the top.

When we visited, a new series of improvements were underway which will see a new cafe and garden added to the central grounds.

The historical town also boasts a museum of archaeology, a beautiful white cathedral and various craft shops.

If you are looking for a fun family day out while you are there, you cannot beat the Slide and Splash waterpark.

For more information click here

New 150 million euro resort planned for the Algarve

A Portuguese group, owned by an Indian family, is going to invest 150 million euros in a luxury resort in the Algarve and hopes the development will be ready just when the financial crisis is over, in 2012.

The development, called 'Quinta da Praia', will be built on a 22.5 hectare area close to the beach in Alvor and will include a five star hotel with 175 bedrooms, a spa club and a residential area with 197 villas and townhouses.

Being the company's first tourist development, Rakesh Kanabar, President of Grupo HN, said the investment during this financial crisis was only possible because the project was already planned two years ago. He believes consumer trust will be restored in three to four years and that the group will have the development ready just when Europe is emerging from the recession.

The construction work should begin when WATG and Broadway Malyan architects finish their designs for the 'lifestyle resort', projected for the end of 2009. The businessman also said the five star hotel will be run by a North-American chain and the Spa club, equipped with a gym, a 'kids club' and private leisure areas, will also be managed by another international chain.

An apartment block, with T2 apartments, will be built within the development which is looking to turn the Algarve into Europe's Florida.

An abandoned area between the development and the beach is going to be completely renovated and walkways to the beach will be built.

Grupo HN is mainly a real estate company working in the Oporto area but now has over 100 million euros tied up in investments in Boavista, Oporto, Arrabida and Gaia. The 'Quinta da Praia' resort will be used as a platform to launch the group in international residential tourism in countries such as Angola, Cabo Verde and Brazil.

For more information click here

New Algarve F1 Circuit Portimão: Revving up for the Big Race

With Portugal's brand new Formula One race track, the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve F1 Circuit almost ready and raring to go, will all the new attention from the world of Motor Sports increase interest within the Algarve property circuit?

Pole Position

The Algarve has been popular with tourists for years and now with the opening of the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve just around the bend, the region is gearing up for even more visitors.

Already an area that is renowned for its golf courses, big game fishing, sailing and scuba diving, the race tack is expected to bring a further one million tourists a year to the Algarve.

On Track

The ambitious race track under construction in Portimao will be open for the Portuguese round of the Superbike World Championship scheduled for 2nd November 2008.

As well as the circuit, the project also includes a karting track, a technology park, a luxury five-star hotel, a sports complex and numerous apartments.

The complex occupies an area of nearly 300 hectares, including a racing track offering 64 variations, the longest being 4,692 metres for Formula One competitions. The circuit has already been approved by FIA for Formula One and by FIM for the Moto Grand Prix.

The circuit is located in Escapadinho, in the foothills of the coastal town of Portimao. Around 195 million Euros has been allocated to the development of the Autodromo, making it the biggest investment ever in the Algarve.

With Faro airport just an hour away and an additional road from the A22 motorway being built, access to the area will be easily achieved.

Fuel Consumption

One of the main concerns associated with the project is the environmental impact the race track may have, particularly for those living near to the venue.

Environmental Impact Studies were carried out by experts and approved with a commendation from the environmental organisations.

But the biggest issue could be the noise levels, even though the construction company are confident that the sound barriers built will minimise the effect on neighbours as much as possible.

Breaking Tradition

Portugal has not featured on the Formula One calendar since the 1997 season, when Jacques Villeneuve won the final race held at Lisbon-based Estoril.

The Formula One bosses pulled the plug on future races being held there, when the race track fell below the safety standards expected of Grand Prix events.

Since then, there has been no indication that Estoril has suffered due to the absence of Formula One, as the area continues to attract a high number of tourist. However, similar to the rest of the country, levels of tourism trade in the area are proportionally down on previous years.

If the Algarve does get the green light to host Formula One, it remains to be seen if that will have any impact on the popularity or tourism trade of Estoril.

Driving the Property Market

It is expected that more than a thousand new jobs will be created by the Autodromo project and tourist levels will substantially increase as visitors flock to see the sporting contests, all of which will have a positive impact on the local and national economy.

And with the complex located outside the coastal zone, there should be more of a focus on the inland of the Algarve, therefore combating the problem the region has suffered with tourists mainly arriving during the seasonal summer months and staying by the sea. The Autodromo will offer an excellent alternative to existing products of the Algarve.

The development and promotion of the complex may also have a positive effect on the local property market. Any growth in employment and tourism trade, especially during the off-peak season, should create higher occupancy rates for buy to let investors.

Already a good area for rentals due to its frequent visitors, the Algarve also has some of the highest property prices in Portugal, according to Global Property Guide research. Often referred to as the 'other market' in Portugal, the region continually seems to perform independently to the rest of the country, supported by its golf and beach tourism.

Dan Johnson, Managing Director, comments:
"The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, will speedily promote the regions assets even further by creating more jobs and increasing the levels of tourism. The local and national economy can only be boosted by the project, which should drive the demand for properties even higher as investors rally for a first class bargain."

For more information click here

Five star luxury resorts planned for the Algarve

By the end of this year, the Quinta da Ombria Hotel and Spa, Castle and Golf Resort will be inaugurated, offering an 18-hole golf course.

In 2009, ground will be broken for a new resort complex, with an eye toward preserving nearby forest lands and supporting local farms. Ultimately, 1,700 guest beds will be included in this new five-star tourist resort in the Algarve.

Also scheduled to open in January 2009, the Tivoli Victoria in Vilamoura is a new tourist investment which aims to attract business conferences to the region with its 900 square meters of meeting space, plus a ballroom, two restaurants, three bars and both an indoor and outdoor pool.

The resort's on-site spa has also been announced as the first state-of-the art infrastructure of its kind in the Algarve. "Even time-honoured vacation settings like Carvoeiro and Albufeira are going retro and becoming fashionable again, for holiday makers and real estate investors."

Included are many other villages in the Algarve, such as Praia da Luz, Ferragudo, Aljezur, Tavira, Silves and Loule, where tradition is still mixing with safe and friendly environments for families.

Contrasting with the high end tourism concept that is associated with the growing golf and luxury resorts, the retro tourism trends aim to go back to the old fishing villages where tradition and ancient arts coexisted with clean and spacious beaches.

For more information click here

Relax on the Algarve

A HUGE number of Brits head for Portugal's sun-drenched southern coast every year.

And the vast majority travel with the aim of taking advantage of the Algarve's sensational natural resources, namely: endless sunshine, golden sands, crashing seas and miles and miles of pristine golf courses.

You can improve your golf swing or your all-over tan without wandering more than a few hundred yards from the coast.

I discovered this fact during a wonderful week's stay at the immaculate Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa.

It's fair to say that everyone deserves a little luxury and the Hilton Vilamoura provides a much-needed treat as well as access to wonderful facilities, both recreational and sporting.

From the moment you step through the door to the time you reluctantly check out and head back to the airport, you feel as though you are living like the proverbial Other Half.

Flying in from Newcastle, my holiday began at Faro Airport where I picked up a hire car before making the easy 25-minute journey to Vilamoura where the Hilton is situated about five minutes' from the town's pretty, bustling marina.

The resort itself is classy without being pretentious or clinical, and perfect for families or couples not looking for hedonistic nightlife.

Once I'd parked at the hotel - or, to be precise, handed the keys to the valet parking attendant – there was little use for a car, especially if your intention was to base yourself at the hotel and take things easy.

The Hilton offers a shuttle service to and from its own stretch of pristine beach.

It takes all the hassle out of a day by the seaside. No lengthy walks in the blazing sun burdened with heavy bags.

It was a case of stepping out of reception and jumping into the waiting people carrier.

After picking up your beach towel from the attendant, you can throw it down and stretch out on the sand to catch some rays.

Or you can pick one of the loungers and sunbathe in a degree of luxury.

If the sea's not your thing, you can laze around the pool - make that pools! The Hilton has no less than six and, between swims, you can soak up the rays on a sun lounger and enjoy a drink and a snack from the bar.

Other forms of on-tap relaxation include the hotel spa and, for the more energetic, the gym.

Budding golfers can work on their game in the hotel simulator before testing their skills on one of Vilamoura's five world-class courses.

With so many welcome distractions to occupy your time, you won't want to spend too long in your bedroom, but it's good to know the suites are the first and last word in comfort.

And with so many activities to enjoy, what better than a filling breakfast to set you up for the day?

I can confirm that the hotel's buffet breakfasts were stupendous.

You could choose traditional English bacon, eggs, toast and beans; stick with cereal; tuck into an omelette; go for continental pastries, cheeses and cold cuts or feel healthy by sampling the wide choice of fresh fruit.

Or, why not try a bit of everything - as I did - washed down with fruit juice or coffee.

Just like the Hilton Vilamoura, it certainly leaves a nice taste in the mouth!

For more information click here

Why The Algarve Is Still An Attractive Place To Buy

Portugal is one of the world's top 20 most-visited destinations, with the Algarve being the most popular area for tourists.

It experiences year-round sunshine, spectacular landscapes, wonderful beaches and excellent golf facilities.

It is a firm favourite with British holidaymakers, as well as Spanish, German and French tourists.

Anyone who is thinking of purchasing a buy-to-let property can attract guests throughout the year. During the summer months families flock to the Algarve's beaches, while keen golfers who want to play in the warmer climate when the courses are less crowded, enjoy visiting in the winter.

The Algarve has been a magnet for golfers for several decades and boasts over 30 courses, with several new ones under construction.

The region has its own airport in Faro, which is served by many low-cost routes and most destinations in the Algarve can be reached within an hour-and-a-half from the airport. There are also plans to build a second airport in the region over the next few years.

Faro itself is a city well worth visiting. It has both Arab and Roman ruins but most of the attractive older buildings were constructed after the earthquakes in 1755 and 1532.

It also has a long sandy beach and a marina. The old part of the city is surrounded by the Roman walls, which date back to the ninth century, and a chapel lined with the bones from over a thousand monks.

A popular destination with tourists is Albufeira, which has grown from a tiny fishing village to become the most popular holiday resort on the Algarve.

A fine selection of beaches extend east and west from the town and for those who like culture, there is a small museum of 15th and 17th century Ming ceramics and a Municipal art gallery that holds regular exhibitions during the season.

A new marina has been completed and in the evenings there is a copious collection of bars, restaurants and clubs where you can relax after a hard day in the sun.

Also in the western Algarve, Lagos has plenty of property investment opportunities with several new developments taking place there.

Lagos is a beautiful seaside town with many shops, bars and restaurants. The Quinta do Lago resort opened in 1970 when tourism investor Andre Jordan recognised that the Algarve was about to become a gold-mine. Quinta do Lago, then a 550 hectare-site, had been in the ownership of the Pinto de Magalhaes family for more then three centuries. After some initial difficulties, Jordan chose an old farm-house, known today as Casa Velha, as the base for his project.

The first master-plan was drawn by a team of Portuguese architects and engineers, directed by Pedro Vasconcellos and Luis Nobre Guedes. The philosophy of Quinta do Lago has always been to offer clients the option of privacy, tranquillity and seclusion when they required it and an active social and sporting life combined with a wide range of leisure facilities.

For more information click here

Algarve plans wine route

ALGARVE WINE producers are working together to launch an Algarve wine route, Rota do Vinho do Algarve, to promote the regional wineries and wines for tourists and visitors.

The idea is to follow the example of other regional routes already operating in the country and to involve the 19 wineries in the region. Through this new promotional tool, the wines produced in the Algarve will be better advertised inside and outside the region.

The issue was debated at a symposium held during the Fatacil exhibition last month with the regional board of agriculture, Direccao Regional de Agricultura (DRA), and the new regional tourism board, Turismo do Algarve (TA).

Wine board

Some administrative issues, such as choosing the board that will lead and manage it, are still to be resolved before the initiative can start.

At present, only seven of the 19 wineries operating in the region have the infrastructures to host wine tastings and guided visits. The reduced number of wineries with conditions to offer promotional events is also pointed out as one of the aspects delaying the start of the project.

Castelao Rodrigues, director of the DRA in Faro, said: "Ideally, the wine route will start with the wineries that are prepared to be involved and the others will join when they can."

Teresa Chicau, former member of the Alentejo wine tour, Rota do Vinho do Alentejo, who is helping Algarve producers, said: "it is important to have an interesting, well planned route, with quality events, so that visitors, many of them foreigners, buy the products and take the information back home."

"This way, Algarve wines have more of a chance of being recognised abroad."

For more information click here

Nick Faldo reveals his latest creation in the Algarve

SIX-time Major winner and European Ryder Cup Captain Nick Faldo has launched his latest golf course design at the Algarve's new Amendoeira Golf Resort. Faldo took time out from his busy Ryder Cup schedule to come to the Algarve to hit the inaugural shot from the first tee and play some holes with media and VIP guests.

The Oceanico Faldo Course is a par 72 championship course set in the stunning hillsides of the Amendoeira Golf Resort, which is a short drive from the thriving medieval town of Silves. Rocky outcrops, meandering watercourses and views to the distant mountains and orange groves define its essential character, and the course covers undulating terrain linking the two highest points on the expansive Amendoeira Estate. From the first hole, a challenging uphill par 4, to the last, a magnificent par 5, it has been laid out, as with all Faldo designed courses, with strategic play in mind, providing a challenging test of golf to professional and occasional golfers alike. Faldo said: "The course is maturing very nicely. The final product has the potential to be the best example of a 'Mediterranean desert-style' course in Europe and it was great to come and play the inaugural round. The project has given me a fantastic opportunity to create a very strategic layout and I think the course will be a real talking point in the Algarve. "Visitors to Amendoeira are going to find our course at Amendoeira a challenging but enjoyable experience." To mark the launch of the golf course, Oceanico commissioned a statue of Nick Faldo, which will take pride of place, overlooking the Faldo Course. The statue, designed by renowned Irish sculptor Paul Ferriter, is made from bronze and is modelled on an iconic image of Faldo in his Major-winning prime.

When Faldo officially unveiled the statue, he commented: "The statue is a great gesture and I'm flattered to have been honoured in this way." For Oceanico Group, the major player in the golf, property and leisure resort markets in Portugal, the opening of the Oceanico Faldo Course at Amendoeira marks a significant step forward in their ambitious plans for the Algarve and beyond. The resort also features a championship course designed by Irish golfer Christy O'Connor Jnr, 400 luxury villas and apartments as well as the Amendoeira Sporting Club, which will include tennis courts, a swimming pool and a football pitch, currently under construction, making the Amendoeira complex the most significant new development in the Algarve in recent years. The two new courses will be officially opened during the week of the Portugal Masters (from October 16 to 19), which will again be hosted by the critically acclaimed Oceanico Victoria Golf Course for the second consecutive year.

For more information click here

Green Light for new Algarve Airports

14 June 2007

A new international airport is expected to be built in the western Algarve. This is one of the main priorities for Associacao de Municipios Lagos-Portimao, an association recently created by the two camaras.

The location for the new airport will be near the International Algarve Racing Circuit, at Sitio do Escampadinho, close to Mexilhoeira Grande, in Portimao. According to the project promoters, the proximity to the racing track is one of the main incentives to attract foreign investment.

The project location has already been given the green light from experts of the Instituto Nacional de Aviacao Civil, Portugal's Civil Aviation Authority. The planning for the future structure, which includes environmental and financial studies, began this month and is expected to be finished in August.

The new airport is expected to have a longer and wider runaway than Faro Airport, with almost three kilometers in length and a passenger friendly arrival and departure area. The airport will be an upgrading of the existing Municipal Aerodrome, which has a runway of only 900 metres.

Cecilia Pires

For more information visit type='text'>Algarve Predicts a Successful Summer

2 May 2007

With statistics indicating that there has been an increase the past few months in all tourism-related sectors throughout the region, the Algarve Tourist Board (RTA) has confirmed its hopes of an equally successful summer, with continuing rises in figures.

According to Hlder Martins, head of the RTA, the month of March recorded an 8.9 per cent rise in revenue in comparison to the same month of 2006, totalling 27 million euros.

On a national scale, the Algarve represented 21,4 per cent of all Portugals tourism revenue.

During March, a staggering 915,000 people visited the region, a 15 per cent increase in comparison to March 2006, with most tourists staying for an average of 4,9 nights, also representing 39,5 per cent of all national tourism that month.
Britons were the regions main visitors, despite the British market diminishing by 3,6 per cent from February to March.

In April, Faro airport registered an increase of 4,3 per cent in passenger movement, in relation to the previous year, and an increase of 34,5 per cent in relation to the previous month, February.

Hlder Martins further stated that the disappearance of staying.
Anglo-Irish Firm on Course for 800 million euro Golf Deal

19 February 2007

Part Irish-owned property company, Oceanico, is on the verge of an 800 million euro deal for five top courses that will give it a stranglehold on the Algarve's lucrative golf tourism market.

The Portuguese-based company is in advanced negotiations to buy the company that controls the five leading courses in the golf hot-spot of Vilamoura.

Lusotur Golfes, which owns Vilamoura's five famed golf courses, is considering several proposals from outside investors to buy the business. And it is understood that Oceanico, owned by Drogheda man Gerry Fagan and his British partner, Simon Burgess, are leading the race to finalise an agreement with Lusotur.

The five golf courses - the Old Course, Victoria, Millennium, Laguna and Pinhal - attracted more than 200,000 players between January and November last year, becoming the first Portuguese golf company to record such a high number in less than one season. Unconfirmed end-of-year net profits were just under 6 million euros.

The Vilamoura courses recorded a growth of 10.5% in the number of rounds played and 11.5% in the number of players.

Oceanico, already regarded as the market leader of four and five-star property development in Portugal, will open its 500 million euro, five-star Amendoeira golf resort next year in Silves, about 32km from Vilamoura.

The two championship courses were designed by Nick Faldo and Christy O'Connor Jnr, and will be surrounded by prestige properties ranging from 500,000 euros to 2 million euros.

The purchase of the Vilamoura courses will give Oceanico strategic control of seven of the leading golf courses on the Algarve.

Oceanico has also invested in Portugal's Silver Coast, where it is building the Royal Obidos resort and golf club, and also in the Azores, where it is part of a consortium with the Siram group that plans to transform the Batalha and Furnas golf clubs on the island of Sao Miguel into luxury tourist resorts.

Andre Jordan, president of the board of directors of Planfipsa SGPS, which owns Lusotur Golfes, said three or four proposals from Portuguese and international groups were under consideration. But Algarve media reports have named Oceanico as the front-runner.

An Oceanico spokesperson declined to comment.

The Anglo-Irish company was only founded in 2000 but has already built up a considerable luxury property portfolio across the Algarve. Its Amendoeira golf resort will be built on a sprawling 640-acre site, and will be the jewel in a portfolio that features popular developments like Jardim de Meia Praia and Estrela da Luz near Lagos, and the recently finished Vila Baia project in Luz. A total of 80% of the properties at its most recent development at Belmar sold off-plans in the first week.

Mr Fagan worked for Campbell Bewley Catering for more than 25 years before moving into property development and relocating to Portugal in 1999.

Golf in Portugal to get 50 Million Euro Investment; Masters Event Planned for October

Golf opportunities in Portugal are growing at a rapid pace, with the industry expecting a 21 percent increase in the next two to three years, according to ITP-Turismo de Portugal. In early January, tourism officials announced a plan for a 50 million Euro investment of public and private funds in promoting golf throughout Portugal. The expansion is expected to enhance Portugal's growing reputation as a premier golf destination.

Portugal's climate and topography make for a great golf environment. Some regions of the country experience 300 days of sunshine per year - ideal conditions for golf lovers, who currently have more than 70 courses from which to choose. The climate, combined with investments in the golfing infrastructure in recent years, has turned the country into a golfing haven. Portugal was recently named "Best Golf Destination 2006" by readers of Golfers Today, a British publication.

ITP wants to build on this success and work to promote golf opportunities in each region of the country. The Algarve and Lisbon regions, as well as Madeira and the Azores, will be priority markets for high-end events, attracting visitors from the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. The unique features of Portugal's other regions will also be promoted with events throughout the seasons.

A key part of the plan is the Portugal Masters event, that will occur between October 18 and 21 at Victoria Clube de Golfe in Vilamoura. The event, part of the PGA European Tour, is expected to happen once a year until 2009 and to attract thousands of foreign visitors and an estimated 1.7 million golf matches, with worldwide television broadcasts. The Portugal Masters prize will be 3 million Euros, making it one of the most important competitions worldwide.

The Portugal Masters joins other important established golf events in Portugal-the Madeira Island Open in March, the Nations Cup in the Algarve region in March, the Estoril Open in April, the Ladies Open of Portugal in the Algarve in May, and the Azores Seniors Open in June.

Fourteen of Portugal's courses are rated in the top 100 best in Europe. Portugal is also a great location to learn the game and perfect technique. Many resorts offer classes with the pros. Courses can satisfy the most demanding golfer, while newcomers won't be intimidated, unless they find the beautiful landscapes and stunning vistas distracting to their game. Out on the many fairways, golfers will have views of dramatic red sea cliffs, bright blue seas, or, perhaps, a grove of mature pine trees.

For more information about golfing in Portugal visit www.visitportugal.com.

IFA Hotels & Resorts Acquires Residential Properties in Portugal

IFA Hotels & Resorts (IFA HR), leaders in mixed use hotel and tourism resort projects across the globe, have acquired two residential buildings in Pine Cliffs Residence, the prime tourist resort of the Algarve, Portugal for US$ 35 million. The resort sits on 2 kms of beach front and on an area of 700,000 squared meters.

Mr. Talal Jassim Al-Bahar, Chairman and Managing Director of IFA HR, said “We are pleased with the new acquisition and believe strongly in the Portuguese market. Pine Cliffs Residence is a new and unique concept for the European market and was developed by United Investments Portugal which is part of the IFA Consortium.”

This is the first investment for IFA HR in residential projects in Portugal. IFA HR will be responsible for all re-sales through their international network of offices. This is part of the company’s strategy of investing in various residential and mixed use developments to further expand product range and global presence. In Dubai, IFA HR purchased The Palm Residence, two shoreline residential buildings on The Palm Jumeirah, where they sold the residential units to clients.

Located in one of the most exclusive areas in Europe, Pine Cliffs Residence will be managed by the Sheraton Algarve and will consist of 2 and 3 bed roomed units, furnished to the highest quality. The resort is surrounded by a pine forest, overlooks the ocean and is home to a superb golf course. Pine Cliffs Residence was launched as an innovative freehold property investment that combines a trouble free holiday home, with a minimum 5% guaranteed return on investment per year for the next three years, with strong capital growth potential.

Pine Cliffs Resort is one of the most awarded resorts in Europe. It has been voted ‘Best Resort in Europe’ by the World Travel Awards for 2001and 2002, while in 2004, 2005 and 2006 was awarded ‘Best Resort in Portugal’ by the same association. The resort was also voted as the ‘Best location in the world to invest in a property in the sun’, by Uk’s channel 4 TV programme, A Place in the Sun. In addition Pine Cliffs is the only resort in the Algarve to receive a ‘Prize of Excellency’ by the Sovereign/First Choice. The International Association of Golf Tour Operators voted the Algarve as ‘Best Golfing Destination in the World’.

The facilities will also include access to Casa Pine Cliffs which will include a reception, a restaurant, terrace-restaurant, gymnasium, health club, mini-market and swimming pools. The owners will also benefit from other facilities provided within the Sheraton Algarve & Pine Cliffs Resort such as a golf course, golf academy, clubhouse, tennis academy, eleven restaurants, five swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), beauty parlour, health club, a children’s play area, several shops, business centre and a unique beach distinguished with the golden flag, which can be accessed through a panoramic elevator or by stairs.

Al-Bahar concluded: “This investment is particularly special to the consortium as UIP started this investment in Portugal in the 80s. We applied the business model of mixed use residential resorts in other investments in Dubai and South Africa; we are delighted and proud to be actively investing into this premium European destination. We are actively seeking new projects to expand our international portfolio and management capabilities.”

Algarve tourism held steady in October

Tourism in the Algarve held steady in October in comparison to the corresponding month in 2005.

According to statistics released by Faro airport, there was a slight fall of 873 passengers, or 0.2 per cent, arriving.

Despite the drop, room occupancies were up half a per cent in the month, at 60.6 per cent, and bed occupancies also rose by half a per cent to reach 49.3 per cent compared with the same time last year.

Although most of these figures are positive, many hoteliers are disappointed because the difference between October 2004 and 2005 were more significant, with 2005 experiencing a rise in tourism of eight per cent over the previous year.

Elidérico Viegas, president of the Associação de Hotéis e Empreendimentos Turísticos do Algarve, (AHETA), the Algarve hotels and resorts association, said that the seasonal tourism in the Algarve is still an issue and is made even more poignant with the drop in passengers going through the airport.

The reduction in passenger numbers does not seem to have affected the golf industry in the Algarve.

The Resident contacted a number of courses in the region, who all said that there were more rounds of golf in October than the same month last year.

Staff at Vila Sol, near Quarteira and Vale do Lobo’s Ocean and Royal courses said that there had been more rounds of golf played this October than in October 2005.

São Lourenço golf course in Quinta do Lago recorded a rise of 8.9 per cent against October 2005. Quinta do Lago’s north and south courses had a combined total of 11,494 rounds of golf, which is 1,249 more than October last year.

Sara Marques from the Algarve Golf Association said that there were eight per cent more rounds of golf played in October than last year at the same time. She was awaiting statistics from two golf courses, but it is unlikely that the figure would alter drastically.

Hélder Martins, the president of the Região de Turismo do Algarve, Algarve tourist board told The Resident that passenger numbers should increase during the winter months in 2007 with the introduction of more flight routes from Milan, Barcelona and cities in Germany.

http://portugalresident.com/portugalresident/showstory.asp?ID=16051

Planning Guidelines Could Spell the End for Silves Theme Park

Atlantis Park, a mega theme park representing an investment of 500 million euros and planned for construction in the Vales do Algoz area of Silves may not go ahead if investors are not given permission to extend the project to include a real estate development.

The park, described as the Algarve's answer to Isla Magica, the popular Disney-style park located in Seville, would be the largest theme park in Portugal if built.

The project, which is being funded by Icelandic investors operating under the company name of Castelote Unipessoal Lda., is intended to be built in an area covering 500 hectares, equivalent in size to 500 football pitches.

A variety of leisure and entertainment infrastructures are planned for this area: cable cars, a theatre, overhead monorail, indoor and outdoor cinemas, amphitheatre, horse-riding centre, mini-golf, tennis club, skateboarding rink, go-kart track, discotheques, night clubs, a casino, restaurants, a shopping centre, water park and swimming-pools, shooting club and bowling centre.

In order to make the project viable, the investors are seeking to extend the park to include a real estate component, which would involve the building of luxury apartments, chalets, villas and private condominiums.

New planning guidelines outlined in the Plano Regional de Ordenamento do Territorio do Algarve (Protal), the master planning document for the Algarve region, dictate a maximum number of tourism beds for the Algarve (24 million) over the next 10 year period.

The number of beds being allocated to the borough of Silves is not yet known, nor is it known if it is likely to be enough to cover this and other projects planned for the Silves area.

The Protal is due to be finalised and ap-proved by the end of this year and will come into force in spring 2007.

If the investors consider that the number of beds allocated to the project are insufficient to make it profitable, they will probably pull out.

As well as the looming Protal hurdle, the Atlantis Park project faces a further possible setback. Currently, the area inquestion is part of the Tunes-Algoz indus-trial axis and still needs to be reclassified under the Plano Director Municipal (PDM), the municipal master plan, as an area suit-able for tourism.

However, it is thought that this is the lesser problem of the two, since the project has the full backing of Silves Camara, which is keen to welcome the investment to the borough.

If the problems are not overcome, however, the investors have mooted alternative sites for the project, including Spain.
Tourists Feel Safe in the Algarve

16 November 2006

A study has revealed that 96.3 per cent of tourists visiting the Algarve felt just as, or more, safe throughout their visit than they do at home.

Carried out over three months by the Escola Superior de Gestao Hoteleira e Turismo da Universidade do Algarve, the hotel management and tourism departments of the University of the Algarve, students asked 1,262 tourists between, July 7 and October 14, travelling home from Faro Airport how safe they felt the Algarve was during their holiday. Overall, the results were positive.

Many said they chose the Algarve as their preferred holiday destination for the climate and the environment. They commented that the beaches were of a high standard and the quality of the places they stayed was good. The pleasant hospitality of the residents was mentioned and an important factor in choosing the Algarve was how safe they felt. When they went out at night for dinner, drinks or just a wander, they said they felt no anxiety and had confidence in the capabilities of the local police force.

They were asked about whether they would return in 2007, 52.8 per cent said that they definitely would and 30.2 per cent said that they would return within the next three years. Of the tourists questioned, 54.5 per cent stayed in hotels, 30.4 per cent in apartments or villas, seven per cent stayed with family or friends and 5.7 per cent said that they stayed in their second homes.

The University said that the study confirms that Europe is regarded as a safe continent overall and the Algarve as one of the most recommended regions.Helder Martins, the president of the Regiao de Turismo do Algarve (RTA), the regional tourism board said he was happy that families saw the Algarve as an ideal tourist destination for their holidays and that it was not only hospitable but safe.

Canadians Seek the Algarve

Twenty Canadian tour operators will be visiting the Algarve on 15th November to get to know the destination, especially with regard to senior golf and tourism, with a view to their promotion in Canada.

The initiative is organised by Star Travel, the principal operator in western Canada and responsible for the greater part of the Canadian tourists who choose the low season to visit the Algarve, the average stay being 22 days.

Canada is a strategic market for the Algarve and, according to the Marketing Plan 2007/2009, the objective is to maintain its current quota of three per cent.

Between January and August 2006, more than 130 thousand nights were registered with Canadian tourists, an increase of 6.1 per cent in relation to the same period last year, corresponding to more than 60 per cent of the national total.

Three New Air Routes For Blackpool

27 October 2006

Air travellers are in for a triple treat with the launch of three new European destinations from Blackpool International Airport this weekend.

Around 600 passengers will board the inaugural flights to Prague, Faro and Amsterdam on what is expected to be one of the busiest weekends of the year so far at the Squires Gate terminal.

The launches take Jet2.com's destinations from Blackpool International Airport to nine with more expected to be added next year. All three inaugural flights leaving on Sunday are booked-up and the new flights put the airport well on the way to recording one million passengers a year passing through the departure lounge.

Five services a week will leave for Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, a gateway airport to the rest of the world. There are four flights a week to the cosmopolitan city of Prague in the Czech Republic which boasts one of the liveliest and cultural hubs in eastern Europe. And Faro, on the cusp of the Portuguese Algarve is a golfer's paradise - the first flight to the town is already half-full with golf bags - will lift off four days a week.

Philip Meeson, managing director of the Leeds-based airline, said: 'Our latest routes show that we are looking to play a major part in bringing inward investment to the region and firmly put Blackpool on the international map. Tourism bosses in Blackpool are hoping the new flights abroad will bring an influx of passengers coming to the resort.

Blackpool's tourism director Jane Seddon said: 'This is a prime opportunity to utilise the new flights to market Blackpool in the overseas industry. Gareth Kennedy, director of business development at Blackpool International Airport, said: 'Our partnership with Jet2.com has gone from strength to strength and we are delighted to offer our passengers the choice of three amazing new destinations.'

Writing courses in The Algarve

Portugal is considered by many to be one of the most inspirational countries in the world for artists of all dimensions of the title. Painters and photographers love it for the wonderful light and contrasts of colour, sculptors can't resist the diverse choice of materials and distinctive characters of the people they meet.

For writers - take a blend of all of the above and throw in history, towns, villages, castles, ruins, cliff tops, trees, flowers, beaches, boats, Marinas, drugs, famous people, arms deals, tourists and criminals plus so much more and who wouldn't be itching to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboards.

For those who have never taken a course in writing and even for those who have - the Algarve will tap hidden depths and bring forth ideas and plots that might have remained locked away in an everyday environment at home.

Combining a holiday in such an interesting country with the opportunity to work and learn in the cool of the morning, then digest the information whilst splashing in the sea or walking through the countryside or local towns will be an unforgettable experience.

Meet new people on the course and exchange ideas; sip cool drinks on the terrace with new friends whilst watching the fiery orange ball of the sun rapidly sink below the horizon and birds scurry to find a resting place in nearby trees. Travel along the coast to the most western point of Europe at the Cape of St Vincent and see where brave sailors set off to discover the world. Stand in the slave market of Lagos and think of human beings shackled and sold as if they were cattle, or just look at the tourists on holiday, their behavior, their clothes and their children - learn how just about anything can fire the imagination.

Writing is for people who have a need to file their ideas on paper where thoughts will be remembered and shared and writers feel good when they are amongst people who understand this need. Writers feed off each other's work and learn from each other's mistakes.

With hours in the day dedicated to writing away from distractions, you will soon develop a desire to continue to write when you return to your everyday life and will have developed a determination to find that time, no matter what the cost, which belongs to the creative part of you and no one else.

In collaboration with writer and journalist Jenny Grainer The Hotel Garbe in Armacao de Pera began a series of writing courses two years ago, which not only proved popular with tourists but local residents as well.

Post contributed by Vicky - hotelgarbe@mail.telepac.pt

Vilamoura Overview

The Vilamoura Estate in the Algarve, is a completely self contained resort area, set between a pine forest and the beach, where the emphasis is on sporting activities, sun, sand and sea.

Most of the villas in Vilamoura are situated amongst the six golf courses, about 2 or 3 kilometres from the wide sandy beaches. Around Vilamoura, you will find superb sporting facilities which include golf, tennis, horse riding, water sports, clay pigeon shooting, sailing and deep sea fishing. The nightlife in Vilamoura is just as varied with a lively Marina which forms the focal point of Vilamoura, with lots of shops, bars, restaurants and discos surrounding the many luxury yachts.

There is also a cinema, and the Casino with cabaret if you fancy a flutter. Vilamoura is renowned for it great golf courses, which are amangst the best in the Algarve and Portugal. Vilamoura is the name given to an area rather than to any actual town. It is outstanding in that it is one of the largest single tourist complex in Europe and covers some 2.000 hectares of land.

The land is variable in its vegetation, some parts covered in pine forests whilst others open recovered marshland. The company that owns this complex is extremely environmentally conscious and every effort is being made to protect nature within its continued planned development. Due to the size of the resort area it offers the visitor nearly every form of sport and entertainment, and on the southern border is a long sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean.

Within the centre of Vilamoura there is a preserved Roman Site and Museum of Cerro da Vila providing an interesting glimpse into the past of the area. In Roman times this location was important in producing a fish paste known as 'garum'.

The ruins also include the baths in which the mariners used to bathe. As a location specifically designed for tourism it has proved to be a very successful location for all ages due to the variety of facilities that it provides holidaymakers. Neighbouring the area is the once upon a time small fishing village of Quarteira that has since the 1960s blossomed into a lively holiday resort. To the northeast is the commercial and administrative town of Loulé with good shopping.

Jet Ready To Win Free Flights With Monarch

Low fares airline Monarch continues to fly the flag for quality low-cost travel from Luton Airport, and as we approach the winter months, now is the time to think about escaping for some winter sun.

With destinations in the Canary Islands, Spain and Portugal available, Monarch is one of the biggest players in European travel from Luton.

As well as low fares, which include complimentary daily newspapers and a refreshing hot towel service, Monarch offer a unique range of tasty hot and cold meals available with prices from 3 pounds.

Seats can be pre-booked at 5 pounds per one-way flight to avoid the last minute free-for-all, or you might prefer to try one of the 48 extra-legroom seats which offer up to six inches of extra space for just 15 pounds each way.

Regular travellers are rewarded too, with a range of benefits through the airline's loyalty scheme, Vantage Club.

Monarch flies up to 60 times per week from Luton Airport and fares start from just 40 pounds and 99 pence one way (67 pounds and 99 pence return), including all taxes.

The Croydon Guardian has teamed up with Monarch to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a pair of return flights to any of the destinations served by Monarch from Luton Airport, which include Alicante, Faro, Gibraltar, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Malaga, Menorca, Palma and Tenerife!

Bowling in the Algarve

There can be few things more relaxing on holiday than a spot of outdoor bowls. Sanctioned by the United Nation's World Tourism Organization and recognized for the first time by the Travel Industry Association (TIA), this annual event fosters awareness among the international community of the importance of travel and tourism and how this important industry touches us all.

Under the umbrella theme 'Tourism Enriches', World Tourism Day provides a platform for countries and communities worldwide to acknowledge the power of travel on all levels: social, cultural, political and economic. This year's simple, straightforward theme speaks specifically to tourism's contributions to individuals, families and communities - from enhanced national reputations to preservation of local heritage.

Roger Dow, President and CEO of TIA, will join international tourism leaders in Lisbon, Portugal - the site of World Tourism Day's official activities - on Sept. 27 to participate in proceedings relevant to the global travel economy.

In the United States, TIA is leading the effort to promote the value of travel on this special day and throughout the year, and the enrichment resulting from active programs that feature a region's culture, heritage, lifestyle and attractions.

'Travel and tourism has an undeniable and direct impact on how visitors perceive the United States and the American people,' said Dow. 'World Tourism Day underscores the value of this industry and the unique opportunity that it plays in promoting what's great about our country for domestic and international travellers.'

Materials produced by the World Tourism Organization and TIA relating to World Tourism Day will be posted at www.tia.org. States and communities across America will have access to these tools to assist in localized promotions.

Travel and tourism keeps the world economy on the move. According to the World Tourism Organization, it is No. 1 in world trade, is the largest export earner, employs millions of people, benefits the environment and local cultures, and develops infrastructure such as airports, roads and ports. In the U.S., direct travel expenditures total 646 billion dollars, with 103 billion dollars created as tax revenue for local, state and federal governments. Nearly 7.5 million jobs are directly attributed to travel and tourism, according to TIA.

Wine in the Algrave

The Algarve has four major wine regions, Lagoa, Portimao, Tavira and Lagos of which Lagoa is the most important.

They produce about 6 million litres annually, mainly red wine but also white and rose. You can pick up timetables from shops, bus stations of course and possibly your hotel.

Taxis are a great way of getting around for short journeys and airport transfers alike. They are recognisable with taxi signs on the roof and black, green or beige colours. For quick hops into town they can work out extremely cheap and save having to choose the designated driver for the night!

Car hire is undoubtedly the best way to get around if you wish to travel at your own pace. Road signs are easily understood and once you get used to navigating on the right hand side of the road (and getting to grips with roundabouts!) you will find it easy to get around. Car hire companies are all over the place in the Algarve but to avoid language difficulties and to pre plan your budget, its a great idea to hire before you travel as you can ensure you read through all the small print.

Eating out in the Algarve

Eating out in the Algarve is a long leisurely affair to be enjoyed, perhaps with a bottle of the many famous Portuguese wines!

The Portuguese tend to eat much later than perhaps we are used to in the UK with restaurants not really filling up and getting busy until around 9-10pm. Again, this is a good opportunity to catch up with friends, have long conversations and enjoy the many dishes on offer.

Some of the more famous dishes in the Algarve and Portugal include chicken piri-piri, which you will find practically in every resort you come across. It varies between mild and tangy to hot and spicy and you can purchase the sauces easily so you can take it home and try it for yourself! Seafood is a must in the Algarve, ranging from simple sardines, with or without sauces, to swordfish, bream, squid and clams.

Meals almost always arrive with bread, pate and olives to enjoy, or perhaps breadsticks with a selection of dips. These are brought to you automatically and are charged to your bill so be sure to advise your waiting staff if you do not wish to have them.

Above all, the restaurants in the Algarve are fantastic for children, whether they are gourmet or street cafes. Every parent will agree that if the kids are happy then the parents are!

Shopping in The Algarve

You want shopping? Closely associated with the sea throughout its history this was the base of the famous Henry the Navigator who, from the point at Sagres organized the successful 15th Century exploration of the New World.

The Algarve has been inhabited for thousands of years but the first developed society was probably the Phoenicians in 1.100 BC and then followed by the Tartessus tribe to about 600 BC. In the same century there is also evidence of a tribe by the name of 'Conii' being found around the area of Vila Real de Santo Antonio followed by another tribe named 'Turduli' in the same area in 400 BC. In between these two tribes the whole area had been inhabited by a wave of Celts. Another tribe from this same period was the 'Cynetes'.

Somewhere around 235 BC the Romans moved up from their base in Cadiz to occupy the Algarve and were eventually removed by the invading Visigoths in about 410 AD. here they were to stay until 711 when the Omayyads from North Africa took possession of the southern Iberian Peninsular. The Moors were to stay in possession of the Algarve until 1185 when Sancho I and his Christian army briefly captured most towns with Silves holding out to 1189. However, by 1191 the Moors had these same towns back in their possession. Finally, King Sancho II and his Christian army helped by Crusaders retook the Algarve in 1236. The first time that the Algarve was referred to as a part of the Kingdom was when Afonso III was crowned in 1249 he took the title of 'King of Portugal and all Algarve'. However, it was not until 1272 that Afonso III eventually took Faro which was the last stronghold of the Moors in the Algarve.

The King of Castile did not at first accept Afonso III's claim to the Algarve and it was only in 1267 at the Treaty of Badajoz that this situation was temporarily resolved. The situation was again settled in 1297 at the Treaty of Alcanices when the actual boundaries between the two countries was agreed. The Algarve inhabitants remained for nearly 300 hundred years without any further change in their rulers but subject to raids from pirates. This situation changed when the throne of Portugal fell vacant in 1580 and the nearest relative in line was King Felipe II of Spain who soon crowned himself as King of Portugal. Shortly after this the Algarve fell prone to attacks from passing English vessels. In 1596 the Earl of Essex invaded Faro and removed amongst other things the historic library belonging to the Bishop of Faro. Francis Drake failed in his attack on Lagos in 1597 so he landed in Sagres and destroyed the house in which Henry the Navigator had lived.

In 1640 the Portuguese decided to rid themselves of their disliked absent ruler and successfully reclaimed their Kingdom placing Joao IV, (Duque de Bragança), on their throne. The Algarve nearly became a separate Kingdom when the ambitious prime minister of Carlos IV of Spain, Manuel Godoy, was involved in the Treaty of Fontainebleau in 1807. In the agreement between Emperor Napoleon and Carlos IV it was agreed that Portugal would be carved into areas to be governed by France and Spain, Manuel Godoy to assume the Algarve. However, the Wars that followed between Portugal supported by England and Spain and France proved a failure for Napoleon and his plans.

The Algarve was also to play a part in the problems once more caused by the claims to the throne of Portugal in 1822. Two royal brothers, Pedro and Miguel, warred against each other with liberal minded Pedro winning against the hardliner Miguel. The Algarve towns, as in most of the country, were at the time divided in their support and from Estombar appeared a Miguel supporter named 'Remexido' with a strong band of followers. His support for Miguel was brutally applied to his enemies and extending especially to robbery. In 1833 Pedro had to send some 2.500 men to the Algarve to successfully capture this elusive and troublesome bandit.

Golfing in The Algarve

Algarve Golf - The Algarve area has been internationally known to provide a variety of great golfing outlets. The region is a very popular European holiday destination with many travel agents offering very cheap deals, especially on last minute bookings where they are trying to fill cancellations. Bargain holidays to the Algarve are not hard to find.

The region is rich in culture, mainly thanks to the many different civilisations that have settled there throughout its long history. The Phoenicians established trading ports along the coast of the Algarve about 3000 years ago. Port Hanibalis, now known as Portimao, was founded in about 550 BCE by the Carthaginians. The Romans began to settle the region in the 2nd Century BCE and many Roman ruins can still be found throughout the Algarve.

The port town of Lagos has some particularly fine examples. Like Spain, Portugal was occupied by the Moorish Caliphate throughout the medieval period giving the region some spectacular examples of medieval Muslim architecture.

If hot, sandy beaches and warm, clear water or culture and history are your thing then you can't go wrong with a cheap holiday in the Algarve. There's plenty for the sporty and adventurous types too, cheap scuba-diving packages are also available.

What's the Weather Like in The Algarve?

The Algarve can boast that it has more sunshine hours than California! Even in the winter, the Algarve is, without doubt, one of the sunniest spots in Europe.

Blue skies, sunshine and warm temperatures in spring, autumn and winter - and even more sun and high temperatures in the summer. Flowers and vegetation grow in abundance all year round, thanks to the region's sub tropical climate.

Humidity rarely causes a problem. However, coastal breezes can occasionally cause evenings to seem chilly, so pack a light jacket, particularly if you plan to eat 'al fresco'. The sea breeze can also be deceptive - masking the fierce rays of the sun - so don't forget to take that vital skin protection, particularly in the summer.
